Tom was anxious to go sea fishing,
so he went to the tackle shop and bought a nice beach caster
and reel. While he was there he also joined the Sea Angling Club.
On the following Sunday he attended a competition on the shores of the estuary at Labbasheeda County Clare. He had omitted to buy a tripod for resting his rod so he improvised and stacked a pyramid of rocks around the butt of the rod. He then sat down with his flask of coffee to wait for a bite on this lovely still sunny Sunday morning. Suddenly, all hell broke loose, the stack of rocks collapsed and the rod dragged accross the shore towards the water at a fairly swift rate. Tom was stunned, the rod continued into the deep water. Jim who was baiting up at the time ran to the waters edge and cast his rig after Toms rod, he made contact but despite all Jims efforts the rod just kept on going until Jims line broke. The rod and reel were never seen again. What was it? Hardly beginners luck! |

In Limerick city
during the months of March April and May there is an unique angling
experience. This is the time of year when the elvers (eel fry)
arrive in our rivers after their long journey from the Sargasso
Sea. In the day or evening time when the water is at low tide
local fishermen haunt the bed of the river looking under rocks
to collect eel fry bait for the nights fishing. During this period
the trout fishing in the Shannon is quite good and there are
many spots around the city where hundreds of anglers gather to
fish for trout, especially on the city's three main bridges at
night. On one night a few years ago Gerry was down as usual to catch the coming tide. There was a slight easterly breeze that night and fishing wasn't at it's best. In spite of this Gerry hooked and landed three lovely trout weighing about one and a half pounds each. Gerry was more than delighted and put his fish in his bag, put it on the carrier of his bike, said good luck to the lads and cycled on home. everyone else fished on in the cold without result. When Gerry arrived home there was just the bag on the carrier of the bike and it was empty, he was bewildered. The next night Gerry arrived for another nights fishing and asked his mate Tony if he had any luck last night after he left. Tony said no, we caught nothing but while we were walking home we couldn't believe our eyes. There in the middle of the road we found a lovely one and a half pound trout, then another and another ...we couldn't believe our luck. Gerry said D#$n and BL%#t it anyway, they were my trout, I lost them on the way home. |

A keen country lad applied for a
salesman's job at a city department store. In fact it was the
biggest store in the area. You could get anything there. The
boss asked him, "Have you ever been a salesman before?"
"Yes, I was a salesman in the country," said the lad.
The boss liked the cut of him and said, "You can start tomorrow
and I'll come and see you when we close up." The day was long and arduous for the young man, but finally 5 o'clock came around. The boss arrived and asked, "How many sales did you make today?" "One," said the young salesman. "Only one?" blurted the boss. "Most of my staff make 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale worth?" "Thirty-eight thousand, three hundred and thirty-four dollars," said the young man. "How did you manage that?" asked the flabbergasted boss. "Well" said the salesman, "This man came in and I sold him a small fish hook, then a medium hook and finally a really large hook. Then I sold him a small fishing line, a medium one and a huge big one. I asked him where he was going fishing and he said "down the coast." I said he would probably need a boat, so I took him down to the boat department and sold him that twenty foot schooner with the twin engines. Then he said his Volkswagen probably wouldn't be able to pull it, so I took him to the car department and sold him a new Land Rover. The boss took two steps back and asked in astonishment, "You sold all that to a guy who came in for a fish hook?" "No," answered the salesman. "Actually, he came in to buy a box Tampons for his wife and I said to him, "Your weekend's shot, you may as well go fishing." |
